You’ve tried to manage it. You’ve adapted your life around it. And yet, here you are.
The restrictive diets. The medications. The constant mental load of planning ahead, scanning for toilets, wondering what today’s trigger will be. If none of it has given you the lasting relief you were hoping for, that’s not a failure on your part – it’s because most approaches treat IBS as a physical problem with a physical fix.
But IBS is a disorder of the gut-brain connection. And that changes everything about how it needs to be treated.
“After six sessions I feel better about my IBS now than I have in a decade.”

The lowdown on IBS

Why does it start?
The jury is still out on what makes us develop IBS in the first place.
Early life stressors, prolonged exposure to antibiotics, changes in the gut microbiome, severe bouts of diarrhoea caused by bacteria or a virus, family history of IBS… a lot of factors could potentially play a role in causing IBS.
Either way, it affects around 1 in 5 adults in the UK, with women more likely than men to be affected. So you’re not alone.
When gut and brain don’t talk like they used to
The consensus is that IBS is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction (DGBI).
This means the gut and the brain are mis-communicating, sending faulty messages to each other and interpreting some things wrong.
As a result, the nerves in the gut can become hypersensitive and signal pain when there might not be a need to.
Gut motility can also become altered; things can move too fast, too slow, or alternate between both, resulting in constipation and/or diarrhoea and painful spasms in the gut.
What does it do?
IBS isn’t dangerous and doesn’t cause structural damage in the body, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to live with.
The symptoms are debilitating and painful, and include diarrhoea, constipation, excess gas, cramps, and bloating.
Other symptoms that aren’t directly related to the belly include fatigue, brain fog, back pain, thigh pain, headaches, pain related to menstruation, pain related to intercourse, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem and confidence.
Not easy on the mind
Living with all of this is understandably painful, uncomfortable, and often leaves people feeling stuck in a vicious cycle where stress and anxiety bring on, or worsen flare-ups, which in turn creates more stress.
Still, people can find it difficult to find the right support and getting help can feel like hard work, in an area where conventional medicine often struggles to bring solutions.
How does IBS hypnotherapy work?
Gut directed hypnotherapy helps to restore regular communication between the brain and the gut, helping to normalise the speed at which things move along in the gut, reducing the sensitivity of the nerves in the gut and reducing the pain created by bloating, cramps and gas.
Hypnotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for IBS, with a solid grounding in scientific research. It has been at the heart of research for 35+ years during which numerous clinical research studies demonstrated that it could reduce IBS symptoms by as much as 70-80%.
These improvements stand the test of time, with the longest current study showing improvements gained from gut directed hypnotherapy were constant 5 years on, without needing further treatment.
As opposed to currently available medications, which can alleviate one or two symptoms, gut directed hypnotherapy has shown to provide relief with various aspects of the condition, from physical to emotional.
And in conjunction with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it helps to better manage the stress and anxiety that is often part and parcel of the condition.
It is safe, long lasting, non-invasive, doesn’t rely on medications or strict diets, and can bring long term relief from symptoms of IBS.
Hypnotherapy is recommended by the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and endorsed by the American College of Gastroenterology for treating IBS.

Here is how our work together is typically organised:
Initial discovery chat (30 minutes) Free
A chance for us to have a chat, discuss your issues, answer any questions you may have about hypnotherapy for IBS, and to explore whether this approach is right for you.
Initial consultation (60-90 minutes) £75
An information gathering session during which we will work together to get a better understanding of your symptoms, your main areas of concern, and set some clear, concrete goals to work towards. There isn’t always hypnosis in this session. I will provide you with a relaxation recording to use between sessions.
Follow-up sessions (60 minutes) £75
In these sessions you will experience the powerful, transformational and relaxing gut directed hypnotherapy, along with tools and techniques you will learn and practice to help you break the vicious cycle of IBS that you’re stuck in. You will always get recordings of our hypnotherapy sessions, so that you practice daily between sessions. Also yours to keep after we finish working together when you need to dip back in.
Some people start seeing improvements after 3 sessions, but much more meaningful and long-term change is usually achieved with 6 to 8 sessions. Additional sessions may be needed depending on personal circumstances. These may be followed by occasional ‘top-up’ sessions if desired.
Please note: you do not need a referral from your GP, however it is crucial that you have been medically diagnosed with IBS before getting started, and that all standard tests have been done to rule out any other conditions. This is to ensure your symptoms are not hiding another condition masquerading as IBS. We will discuss this in our initial chat.
I was able to control my symptoms for the first time in 20 years
“I suffered with severe anxiety regarding my IBS and was obsessed with working out where the nearest toilets were every single time I went out. Olivia taught me the link between my symptoms and how my brain processed the panic of being desperate to use the toilet when out. After just 2 sessions and some practice of the hypnotherapy techniques that Olivia taught me I was able to control my symptoms for the first time in 20 years! After the course I felt that I had control of my stomach back! I would highly recommend a course of hypnotherapy to anyone suffering with IBS symptoms! Thank you Olivia, it’s been a game changer for me!”

FAQs
If you’re new to gut-directed hypnotherapy, these are some common questions people have about it. If there’s anything else you’re wondering, please don’t hesitate to send me a message!
What is gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT?
IBS is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction; somewhere along the line the gut and the brain stopped communicating effectively, signals started getting misinterpreted, the gut lining started becoming more sensitive and more reactive, making things move along too fast or too slow, creating pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation as well as a range of other symptoms.
Gut directed hypnotherapy works by restoring this miscommunication between gut and brain, helping the gut become less sensitive, less reactive, and alleviating symptoms; physical, mental and emotional.
Stress and anxiety often come hand in hand with IBS; stress, anxiety, catastrophic thinking and worry can actually bring on or worsen a flare-up, creating the worst kind of vicious cycle to be stuck in.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapy that helps to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours in order to reduce the impact of stress and improve mental health.
Gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT are both evidence based treatments for IBS, that’s why using them together we can get the best outcomes and alleviate symptoms.
Are you saying it’s all in my head?
No, absolutely not. The term “disorder of the gut-brain interaction” recognises the complex connection between the gut and the brain, and the importance of that connection. It doesn’t imply that symptoms are imagined or solely psychological.
Just because IBS doesn’t come up as such in any tests does not mean it isn’t real, it just means we don’t have the right tests yet. And it certainly doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real.
Instead, it highlights how the gut and brain communicate like a two-way street, where emotional and psychological factors can influence the gut and vice versa.
The goal in gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT is to teach you how to use your mind to control your gut rather than your gut controlling you.
Will this work for me? I’ve already tried it all
I get it. Many people, myself included, try changing their diet, using medication, supplements, and anything else that promises relief. But in the long term, it often doesn’t work, or it becomes unsustainable.
That’s often because these approaches focus mainly on the physical symptoms, without addressing the gut-brain connection that plays a key role in IBS. Gut-directed hypnotherapy works by calming this communication and helping the gut become less sensitive and reactive, which is why many people experience more lasting, more sustainable relief.
Can I do this if I am on a restrictive diet or rely on medication
Yes, absolutely. First of all, I will never recommend any changes to prescribed medication. That is something to discuss with your GP or healthcare provider, not me.
Whatever your current diet, the foods you avoid, or the medications you use – whether over the counter (OTC) or prescribed, we can still work together to help you regain freedom from the symptoms that continue to bother you.
Many people find that as their symptoms improve, they naturally feel more comfortable reintroducing certain foods or relying less on OTC medications, but any changes are always made gradually and in a way that feels safe for you.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed, but it is essential that you have seen your GP or doctor about your symptoms before we work together – including any new or changing symptoms. This means having the relevant initial tests done, such as blood tests and stool tests, and a colonoscopy if your doctor has recommended one.
This is important because some symptoms that overlap with IBS can be signs of a structural condition, such as IBD, coeliac disease, or something else that needs medical attention.
I will not work with anyone who has not had these things investigated first, because in those cases, symptoms need to be diagnosed and managed medically, not approached in the same way as IBS.

How much does it cost?
The initial discovery call is free and lasts ~30 minutes. Individual sessions are £75 each. For those committing to a full course of treatment, a six-session pack is available at £415. If you have any questions about pricing or your specific situation, feel free to get in touch.
How long does it take to see results?
Some people start noticing improvements within a few sessions, particularly in how their body respond to symptoms and stress. More meaningful and lasting change typically builds over time, and comes with consistent practice, which is why I usually work over a course of 6 to 8 sessions.
Do sessions work online?
Yes, and research shows that both hypnotherapy and CBT are just as effective online as in person. Hypnosis isn’t something done to you; it’s something you do yourself, guided by a therapist’s voice. Whether we’re in the same room or on a video call, the process is exactly the same. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a laptop or tablet, and a quiet comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed.
Can this help with IBS-related anxiety?
Yes, very much so. Anxiety and IBS often go hand in hand, with each influencing the other. Gut-directed hypnotherapy, especially when combined with CBT, can help reduce anxiety, improve stress management, break the stress-symptom cycle, and improve your overall sense of control. Spillover effects onto other areas of life are often noticed, improved stress management helps more than just IBS!
Is this for me?
If you have been diagnosed with IBS by your GP/primary care physician, you are suffering with debilitating and painful symptoms and/or are struggling to control your bowel, then gut-directed hypnotherapy is a safe and effective approach for you.
