Regain freedom from ibs

You’ve probably tried it all…. The restrictive diets. Cutting out various food groups. Adding in more fibre. The medications. The prebiotics. The probiotics. The expensive supplements.

Somehow, IBS continues to rule your life, keeping you from living fully, enjoying food without fear, hacking at your confidence, leaving you feeling anxious and in fear of the next flare-up.

There’s a way to regain control, and start living life on your terms.

Hi, I’m Olivia!

I’m a hypnotherapist helping people find relief from the physical and emotional symptoms of IBS and regain control over their lives by using a holistic and evidence-based approach.

Gut directed hypnotherapy combined with cognitive behavioural therapy can reduce symptoms by over 70%, help regain body & food freedom and improve overall quality of life. Because it’s not all about the physical symptoms, it’s the emotional and mental ones too.

I love helping people transform their relationship with their body and food because it’s genuinely life changing to be able to manage something you’ve always been told you ‘just have to live with’. I know that, because I’ve been there.

Hypnotherapy for IBS changed my life, and it can change yours too. But don’t just take my word for it. With over 35 years of research behind it, it is one of the most effective ways to regain control of symptoms, mental and physical, without drugs or strict diets. And I’m here to help you do just that.

About IBS

Why does it start?

The jury is still out on what makes us develop IBS in the first place.

Early life stressors, prolonged exposure to antibiotics, changes in the gut microbiome, severe bouts of diarrhoea caused by bacteria or a virus, family history of IBS… a lot of factors could potentially play a role in causing IBS.

Either way, it affects around 1 in 5 adults in the UK, with women more likely than men to be affected. So you’re not alone.

What does it do?

IBS isn’t dangerous and doesn’t cause structural damage in the body, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to live with.

The symptoms are debilitating and painful, and include diarrhoea, constipation, excess gas, cramps, and bloating.

Other symptoms that aren’t directly related to the belly include fatigue, brain fog, back pain, thigh pain, headaches, pain related to menstruation, pain related to intercourse, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem and confidence.

When gut and brain don’t talk like they used to

The consensus is that IBS is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction (DGBI).

This means the gut and the brain are mis-communicating, sending faulty messages to each other and interpreting some things wrong.

As a result, the nerves in the gut can become hypersensitive and signal pain when there might not be a need to.

Gut motility can also become altered; things can move too fast, too slow, or alternate between both, resulting in constipation and/or diarrhoea and painful spasms in the gut.

Not easy on the mind

Living with all of this is understandably painful, uncomfortable, and often leaves people feeling stuck in a vicious cycle where stress and anxiety bring on, or worsen flare-ups, which in turn creates more stress.

Still, people can find it difficult to find the right support and getting help can feel like hard work, in an area where conventional medicine often struggles to bring solutions.

You don’t just have to live with it

There’s good news though! Because there’s a way to fix this miscommunication.

You guessed it – gut directed hypnotherapy. It is one of the most effective treatments, with a solid grounding in scientific research. It has been at the heart of research for 35+ years during which numerous clinical research studies demonstrated that it could reduce IBS symptoms by as much as 70-80%.

These improvements stand the test of time, with the longest current study showing improvements gained from gut directed hypnotherapy were constant 5 years on, without needing further treatment.

Research found gut directed hypnotherapy was as effective to reduce symptoms as strict elimination diets (like low FODMAP) and more effective than medications like laxatives and antispasmodics.

How it works…

Gut directed hypnotherapy helps to restore regular communication between the brain and the gut, helping to normalise the speed at which things move along in the gut, reducing the sensitivity of the nerves in the gut and reducing the pain created by bloating, cramps and gas.

As opposed to currently available medications, which can alleviate one or two symptoms if that, gut directed hypnotherapy has shown to provide relief with various aspects of the condition, from physical to emotional.

And in conjunction with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), it helps to better manage the stress and anxiety that is often part and parcel of the condition.

It is safe, long lasting, non-invasive, and doesn’t rely on medications or strict diets to work, bringing long term relief from symptoms of IBS.

It is endorsed by the American College of Gastroenterology and recommended by the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for treating IBS.

About me

I’m Olivia, and I’m passionate about using hypnotherapy and CBT to help people suffering with IBS to regain control over their symptoms. Physical and mental.

Because I get it. I’ve been there.

Anxious about eating out. About what would cause a flare-up. About travelling. About clothes that fit in the morning, but no longer in the evening. Topped with almost constant brain fog and fatigue. The list just goes on and on.

After far too long, I found gut directed hypnotherapy. And everything changed. Within weeks I felt better, started feeling more in control. Gradually I regained control over symptoms, my body, and the difficult thoughts and feelings that accompanied it all.

I am a certified Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist, trained in one of the most prestigious and accredited hypnotherapy colleges in my field (UKCHH) that integrates hypnosis, CBT and mindfulness. My diploma is recognised by the British Psychological Society and is awarded by the NCFE.

I am endlessly fascinated by the connection between physical and mental health, and I am here to help you get better, in mind and body.

FAQs

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is used as a therapeutic technique that involves a state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility and often, deep relaxation. It can be compared to the feeling of daydreaming, when you are completely absorbed by your imagination. Just like in a daydream, you always remain fully conscious and in control, and cannot be stuck in hypnosis.

Hypnosis can help you to become more open to positive suggestions, and using your imagination, it provides you with a time and a space where you can rehearse changes to how you think, feel, behave as well as how you respond to anxiety inducing, stressful situations.

In the case of gut directed hypnotherapy, mounting evidence demonstrates that hypnosis affects the physiology of the body in a positive way, by helping the gut lining to become less sensitive, reduce painful contractions and spasms, and positively affects how the brain processes pain.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Just like everyone can get absorbed into a daydream or into a captivating movie, anyone can get hypnotised. It is very easy to go into hypnosis, it doesn’t take a special skill, ability or talent, and people tend to get better and better at it every time they use it.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is completely safe when used responsibly, by a fully qualified hypnotherapist who is a member of a professional body.

Hypnosis does not have side-effects, and cannot make your IBS worse.

However it may not be appropriate for people with psychotic disorders, severe personality disorders, certain medical conditions (such as epilepsy), active substance abuse issues, cognitive impairment, specific psychiatric conditions, and when there is a strong unwillingness or resistance to the process.

Does hypnotherapy work online?

Hypnosis is not something that is done ‘to you’, it is something you do yourself, with the guidance of a therapist. Therefore, whether we are physically side by side, or speaking remotely through a video call, the process remains unchanged; you can follow my guidance by listening to my voice to use the power of your mind and create change through hypnosis.

All you really need is an internet connection, a laptop or tablet and a quiet, comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. The added benefits of working virtually is that you can be comfortable in your own space, maybe with a nice blanket and some cushions. Basically, get cosy.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

During a hypnotherapy session you will be guided into a state of focussed attention, relaxation and suggestibility. You will remain aware and in control the entire time, because hypnosis is not a state of sleep, unconsciousness, or mind control.

Hypnotherapy feels different to everyone, for example some people might feel more absorbed by their imagination and positive suggestions, others may feel more relaxed than normal.

Using visualisation, imagery and suggestions, you will be invited to imagine your gut functioning normally, targeting specific symptoms that you’d like to work on.

Is this for me?

If you have been diagnosed with IBS by your GP/primary care physician, you are suffering with debilitating and painful symptoms and/or are struggling to control your bowel, then gut-directed hypnotherapy is a safe and effective approach for you.

What is gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT?

IBS is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction; somewhere along the line the gut and the brain stopped communicating effectively, signals started getting misinterpreted, the gut lining started becoming more sensitive and more reactive, making things move along too fast or too slow, creating pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation as well as a range of other symptoms.

Gut directed hypnotherapy works by restoring this miscommunication between gut and brain, helping the gut become less sensitive, less reactive, and alleviating symptoms; physical, mental and emotional.

Stress and anxiety often come hand in hand with IBS; stress, anxiety, catastrophic thinking and worry can actually bring on or worsen a flare-up, creating the worst kind of vicious cycle to be stuck in.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a therapy that helps to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours in order to reduce the impact of stress and improve mental health.

Gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT are both evidence based treatments for IBS, that’s why using them together we can get the best outcomes and alleviate symptoms.

Are you saying it’s all in my head?

No, absolutely not. The term “disorder of the gut-brain interaction” recognises the complex connection between the gut and the brain, and the importance of that connection. It doesn’t imply that symptoms are imagined or solely psychological.

Just because IBS doesn’t come up as such in any tests does not mean it isn’t real, it just means we don’t have the right tests yet. And it certainly doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real.

Instead, it highlights how the gut and brain communicate like a two-way street, where emotional and psychological factors can influence the gut and vice versa.

The goal in gut directed hypnotherapy and CBT is to teach you how to use your mind to control your gut rather than your gut controlling you.

Will this work for me? I’ve already tried it all.

I get it. Most people, me included, try to change their diets, use meds, supplements, and anything else under the sun to try to manage the symptoms, but in the long term it often doesn’t work, or is unsustainable.

That’s because of one simple thing. Focusing on the symptoms trying to fix it through food ignores the root cause of the problem: the miscommunication between gut and brain, which is what hypnotherapy tackles.

Can I do this if I am on a restrictive diet / rely on medication

Yes, absolutely. First of, I will never recommend any changes to any prescribed medication, that is for your GP to decide and not me.

Whatever your diet, what foods you avoid, what meds you use to help; over the counter (OTC) or prescribed, we can still work together to help you regain freedom from the symptoms that continue to bother you.

A lot of people start reintroducing foods they had cut out for a while, or realise they are not as dependant on OTC meds as previously as their symptoms start getting better.
